No public-domain translation exists. Sense: 'Even after performing the visibility-correction stated by Śrīṣeṇa, Āryabhaṭa and Viṣṇucandra, there is daily no agreement between observation and computation, at rising or at setting. Therefore I shall state a visibility-correction for the asterisms, the Sage and the Deer-hunter; this, being in accord with observation, is to be given to a long-tested pupil.' — Paraphrase by the compiler

'The Sage' used absolutely as a name for Canopus. At Bhagrahayutyadhikāra 13–14 Brahmagupta writes of the dṛkkarma 'of the asterisms, the Sage, and the Deer-hunter' (bha-muni-mṛgavyādhānām), and the commentary glosses the compound word for word as nakṣatra-agastya-lubdhakānām. Bhāskara II inherits the usage — 'bhānāṃ muner mṛgaripor udayāstalagne'. The verses are also notable for naming the predecessors whose dṛkkarma Brahmagupta rejects: Śrīṣeṇa, Āryabhaṭa and Viṣṇucandra.

Devanagari transcribed by the compiler from the page FACSIMILE (archive.org scan leaf n318 = printed p. 294) because the archive.org OCR of this volume is unusable for Devanagari; the page image itself was fetched in this session at https://archive.org/download/VatesvaraSiddhantaSanskritText/page/n318.jpg . Every numeral was re-read at full scan resolution. The SQUARE brackets and the figures inside them are the EDITION'S (K. S. Shukla, INSA) own decoding of the bhūtasaṅkhyā word-numerals, reproduced so that no numeral is silently converted. '॥' after 7 and 19 in verse 1 renders the edition's fraction sign for ½. Shukla's English translation and notes are in copyright and are neither quoted nor relied on here — only the constituted mūla text and the edition's numeric glosses.

'Vyādha is deflected to the south by forty degrees, and Muni by seventy-seven.' — Literal rendering by the compiler

A DIVERGENT USE OF THE NAME. In Brahmagupta and Bhāskara II 'Muni' used absolutely means Canopus (Agastya). Vaṭeśvara agrees with them: at VIII.2.9 he writes 'Vyādha is deflected south by forty degrees, and Muni by seventy-seven' — 77° south is Canopus (true 75°58' in his frame), 40° south is Sirius. Sāmanta, however, uses Muni at XII.26 and XII.27 as an alternative name for the star he identifies as Lubdhaka, i.e. Sirius, and gives Agastya its own separate treatment at XII.35–40. The name is therefore not stable across the tradition.
