Transcribed from the Devanagari OCR of the printed edition at shloka_source_url (Achyuta Nand Jha ed., vol. 1) and checked word-for-word against two further independent scans of two different printed editions of the same commentary — Krishna Chandra Dvivedi's (https://archive.org/download/brihatsamhitawithbhattotpalavivrittipartidr.krishnachandradvivedi/Brihat%20Samhita%20%20with%20Bhattotpala%20Vivritti%20Part%20I%20-%20Dr.%20Krishna%20Chandra%20Dvivedi_djvu.txt) and A.V. Tripathi's (https://archive.org/download/JiUm_brihat-samhita-part-1-of-varaha-mihira-by-avadh-bihari-tripathi-saraswati-bhavan-granthamala/Brihat%20Samhita%20Part%201%20of%20Varaha%20Mihira%20by%20Avadh%20Bihari%20Tripathi%20-%20Saraswati%20Bhavan%20Granthamala_djvu.txt). Only glyph-level OCR artifacts that all three scans show to be artifacts (e.g. OCR रद्वव for रद्गव, श्व for श्च) have been normalised; every substantive reading is as scanned, and the two places where the scans genuinely differ are flagged in identification_notes.

'Now there are three mārgas, northern, middle and southern; and again, each singly threefold, they declare nine vīthīs. Of these, in the north are Nāgā, Gajā and Airāvatī; in the middle, Vṛṣabhā, Go and Jāradgavī; in the south, Mṛgā, Ajā and Dahanā. Of these, the Nāgā consists of Āgneya (Kṛttikā), Yāmya (Bharaṇī) and Vāyavya (Svātī). The Gaja-vīthī is the three beginning with Rohiṇī. Beyond that, four make the Airāvatī. The Vṛṣabhā is the two Phalgunīs. The Go-vīthī is the four beginning with Prākproṣṭhapadā. Śravaṇa, Dhaniṣṭhā and Vāruṇa (Śatabhiṣaj) are the Jāradgavī. The Mṛga-vīthī is Tvāṣṭra (Citrā) and Hasta. The Ājī is Maitra (Anurādhā), the one whose lords are Indra and Agni (Viśākhā), and Maindra (Jyeṣṭhā). And Mūla with the two Āṣāḍhās they hold to be the Vaiśvānarī.' — Literal rendering by the compiler

'That of Varuṇa' = ŚATABHIṢAJ, whose regent is Varuṇa. From Parāśara's vīthī scheme quoted by Utpala on BS 9.4: 'śravaṇa-dhaniṣṭhā-vāruṇāni jāradgavī' — Śravaṇa, Dhaniṣṭhā and Vāruṇa form the Jāradgavī. Position in the triad fixes it: the asterism after Dhaniṣṭhā is Śatabhiṣaj. Utpala confirms the deity at BS 97.5: 'varuṇo ’pāṃ-patiḥ śatabhiṣajaḥ'. SCAN VARIANT: the Krishna Chandra Dvivedi scan reads वारुणानि (grammatically the expected vṛddhi form), the Achyuta Nand Jha scan वरुणानि; the difference is orthographic only. Modern star follows the database's 'shatabhishaj' entry.
