The sky that moved

The first essay read five stars as instruments — an omen-site, an eye chart, a season bell, a pivot, a century hand. This one reads the frame the instruments were mounted in. The earth's axis swings once around in about 26,000 years, so the point where the sun crosses the equator creeps backward along the star-road — one degree in seventy-two years, a full nakṣatra in roughly a millennium. No observer notices in a lifetime. A textual tradition a thousand years deep cannot help but notice: rules stop matching the sky they were written under, and the corrections, apologies and myths that follow are a record of the drift. The Sanskrit corpus is exactly that deep, and it kept the receipts.

An east that was true once
कृत्तिकाः प्रथमम् · the Pleiades due east
To establish the sacred fires you need a date, and the date is given by a star. The Śatapatha-brāhmaṇa's rule names the Kṛttikās — the Pleiades — and gives three reasons: they are Fire's own asterism, they are the most numerous, and one more, stated as casually as a compass reading: they alone rise exactly east.
That sentence is a timestamp its authors never meant to leave. A star rises due east only while it stands on the celestial equator, and the Pleiades were there in the third millennium BCE — they have been sliding away ever since, rising today more than a hand-span north of east. Śaṅkara Bālakṛṣṇa Dīkṣita built the first Indian precession-dating argument on this line in 1895. The text does not know it is old; it simply kept a direction that stopped being true.
The same star heads the working roster. The Yajurveda's litany of the nakṣatra-bricks — one brick on the fire-altar per asterism, each with its presiding deity — begins at Kṛttikā and runs through twenty-seven names, many of them archaic: Tiṣya who became Puṣya, the two 'Disjoiners' who became Mūla, a second Rohiṇī who became Jyeṣṭhā.
And the Taittirīya-brāhmaṇa cuts that roster in half at Kṛttikā and at Viśākhā — fourteen asterisms of the gods, fourteen of Yama, lord of the dead, circling opposite ways. A line drawn through Kṛttikā and Viśākhā is where the equinoxes stood in the same remote epoch: the sky's oldest coordinate system, remembered as theology.

The station that fell from the sky

How many nakṣatras are there? The litany above counts twenty-seven and knows no Abhijit. The same Taittirīya corpus, one layer later, knows exactly where the missing twenty-eighth sits — wedged between the Aṣāḍhās and Śroṇā — and why it bears its name, 'the Victor': the gods won their war in it.
Abhijit is Vega — the brightest star of the northern sky, but far from the moon's road, a station the calendar could squeeze in or manage without. The Mahābhārata tells what happened to it as family drama wrapped around a bureaucratic crisis: the station drops out, Time stops adding up, and Indra takes the problem to Skanda and Brahmā.
One verse, three calendars deep. Abhijit falls; Brahmā institutes the reckoning that begins at Dhaniṣṭhā — the very frame the Vedāṅga-jyotiṣa runs on, as the next section shows; and the verse still remembers that before all of that, Rohiṇī stood first. The Kṛttikās, raised to heaven at the story's close, are described by exactly the two facts the ritual texts led with: cart-shaped, and Fire's. Centuries later the Sūrya-siddhānta still catalogues Abhijit and mounts it near the pole of its globe — the star outlived its station.

The month the sun turned

The Dhaniṣṭhā-first reckoning was a real, working calendar. The Vedāṅga-jyotiṣa — the Veda's own astronomy manual — opens its five-year cycle at the instant sun and moon stand together at Śraviṣṭhā (Dhaniṣṭhā's older name), at the start of the northward course, at the start of the month of Māgha:
The epic keeps that address in its most solemn scene. Bhīṣma, holding the boon of choosing his own hour, lies on the arrow-bed through fifty-eight nights and releases his life only when the sun turns back — and he names the month:
The address has expired. Precession has walked the December solstice back out of Dhaniṣṭhā, through Śravaṇa, into Mūla's neighbourhood — about two stations in the three thousand years since the Vedāṅga frame fit the sky. The verses were not updated, and that is their value: a rule and an epic scene both pinned to a configuration the sky no longer offers.

The astronomers notice

By the sixth century CE the mismatch was too large to ritualize away, and Varāhamihira states it as fact: the old books say the southward course began at Dhaniṣṭhā's start — now it begins at Cancer. Something either moved or the record lies; and he chooses the record over the sky's constancy, prescribing the check anyone can run: watch sunrise against a distant mark, trace the shadow's swing in a large circle.
The Sūrya-siddhānta turns the observation into a mechanism: the circle of asterisms itself 'librates' — six hundred swings in an age — and closes with the clause that matters most, that the motion is to be taken as agreeing with what is seen (dṛk-tulyatā). Trepidation is the wrong model; the drift does not swing back. But a wrong model fitted honestly to a real observation is astronomy working exactly as it should.
The sky depends on where you stand

Time is one axis of the drift; place is the other, and the texts kept that receipt too. The Viṣṇu-purāṇa states the principle for the sun with almost modern indifference: sunrise and sunset are not events in the world but events at your horizon.
Varāhamihira makes the principle procedural for a star. Agastya — Canopus, the far-southern season bell of the first essay — hugs the horizon so low that every city gets its own visibility constant. The Bṛhat-saṃhitā says so outright: compute it for each place (pratideśam) — and then works the example for its own city: at Ujjayinī, Agastya appears when the true sun stands seven degrees short of Virgo. The astronomer announces the bearing; the king, at first light, pours the offering toward the south.

What does not move

Every drift in this essay is measured against something that holds still. When the Mahābhārata's geography reaches the northern quarter, it does not describe mountains — it describes the sky that never sets:
The Seven Sages and Arundhatī present 'night and day'; a station standing fixed — dhruvam — at the Grandfather's sacrifice; sun and moon wheeling around it forever. It is the still point the first essay ended on, seen this time from the geography books. The frame of the sky moved; its axle, on any human timescale, did not; and a tradition that kept both books — the rules that aged and the pivot that didn't — left us, without meaning to, a measurement of time itself.

The maintenance records
The first essay argued that the texts used stars as instruments. This one adds the maintenance records: a fire-ritual that preserved a dead direction, a litany that kept the obsolete count of twenty-seven bound in the same corpus as the page that knew the missing star, an epic that stored two expired calendars inside a single verse of myth, and a scientific tradition that finally measured the slippage, prescribed the observation, and modeled it — wrongly, but against the right data. Greek astronomy names one discoverer of precession; the Sanskrit corpus instead preserves the strata that a moving sky deposits in any textual tradition deep enough to remember what the stars used to do.
